From Leo AI: Dance of Shame is a 3-minute Soundie released on August 8, 1942, starring American burlesque dancer Faith Bacon. Directed by Josef Berne and produced by Official Films, this short film is a burlesque performance set in an antique-styled environment, featuring Bacon dancing in black veils and scant attire.

Soundies were musical short films designed for playback on Mills Panoram jukebox-like machines, commonly found in bars and nightclubs. While many Soundies featured musical performances, some, like Dance of Shame, showcased burlesque and variety acts.
In Dance of Shame, Faith Bacon performs a provocative dance wearing a spangly thong bikini (not termed as such at the time), partially obscured by a sheer black cloth.
The accompanying music is an instrumental version of “Bolero” by Arthur Johnston, performed by Spike Jones and His City Slickers.
Despite its artistic framing, the short faced significant censorship. Five local censorship boards ordered its removal from Soundies reels due to its suggestive content. Its release was delayed by a year, and even then, it remained controversial. The short was one of five burlesque Soundies produced in July 1942—three featuring rival fan dancer Sally Rand and two with Bacon—but the genre was soon discontinued on Panoram screens due to moral pushback and limited variety.
